Cold Plate Challenge: Make it Healthy, Keep it Cold

Cold Plate Challenge.jpg

Food First NL is challenging YOU to make cold plates delicious and nutritious! This November and December, host an event (big or small - up to you!) where you serve your rendition of a healthy cold plate. Try new recipes that include a variety of veggies, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, and serve water instead of sugary drinks. The new Canada’s Food Guide is a great place to start when looking for cold plate inspiration!

Sounds pretty easy, right? Well let’s take it a step further:

  1. Make your cold plates with foods that are locally sourced. Look to nearby farms for veggies, make homemade pickles, and use wild berries.

  2. Bring people together with your cold plates. Invite new people to enjoy what is certain to be a tasty treat.

  3. Work on making your cold plates wasteless - it’s easy! Serve on reusable dishes that people can keep or return to you, and compost food scraps.

  4. Lastly, cold plates have a bad reputation for food safety, but we know better. Keep your cold plates chilled at or below 4°C (40°F) until they are served. This ensures all your yummy food remains safe to eat.
