The term food insecurity is used to describe the struggle to afford food. Food insecurity affects over four-million people in Canada, including 1.15 million children. In Newfoundland and Labrador, we have the highest food insecurity rate of all Canadian provinces, with at least 15.9% of households struggling to put food on the table.
Recognizing the complexity of food insecurity, Food First NL is partnering with the CBC and other non-profit organizations to host a series of community conversations to learn more about what causes food insecurity and what we can do to help.
While poverty is the root cause of food insecurity, other forms of discrimination—based on where a person lives, their gender, race and ethnicity, Indigeneity, ability, physical and mental health, and age—often create barriers that make the struggle to afford food even more difficult and exhausting.
Our first community conversation looks at how single parents experience food insecurity. Join us on November 28th at Daybreak Parent Child Centre, at 6:00 pm to learn more about food insecurity and how we can support our communities.
