Labrador Anchor Collaborative — Traditional Foods in Healthcare

The Labrador Anchor Collaborative works to improve traditional food access in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our main focus is on traditional food access in healthcare settings. Members include Food First NL, NL Health Services, Nunatsiavut, NunatuKavut, Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Traditional foods are a big part of physical, mental, and spiritual health and healing for many people in N.L., especially Indigenous peoples. These foods have become more difficult to access because of climate change and ongoing colonization processes. Traditional foods are also rarely available in healthcare settings. We believe this is something we can change.

Our work is guided by what we hear from communities, patients, residents, and family members. We are dedicated to partnering with communities to hold broad conversations, share meals, and get out on the land when invited. These conversations shape our understanding of the problems and the opportunities to improve.

— Resident, Happy Valley-Goose Bay Long-Term Care

Since 2021, we've hosted several traditional food meals with staff and residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay’s Long Term Care Home. We served local favourites like berry tarts, freshly baked rolls, and caribou soup.

The Labrador Anchor Collaborative joined Nourish Leadership’s “Anchor Cohort” program in 2021. We’re now in our second phase, which will continue until 2025. During this time, we want to bring the lessons learned from our work in Labrador to healthcare settings across N.L. We're also expanding our on-the-ground work in the Big Land.
