Online food fun things!

Hi, this is Alison! I’m a program assistant at Food First NL through an internship form Conservation Corps NL. I wanted to fill your feed with some positivity and optimism to break through the scariness that is COVID-19.

A silver lining of this experience is that I’ve found ways to keep myself from getting too antsy while being asked to stay inside. I started new hobbies and picked back up old ones, I finished that pesky project that never got finished, and I started being more aware of what I have in my house in regards to food. Now that we have to practice social distancing due to COVID-19, I thought I’d share some fun, food-focused ideas that I’ve come across online!

Running low on food and not sure what to cook? Avoiding the grocery store but want to try new recipes? The Supercook website/app is exactly what you need! It makes you REALLY LOOK at what you have in your cupboard, fridge and freezer. It can also get you to use the canned food that has been living in the back of your cupboard. This website gets you to choose the foods that you have on hand (whether it is dairy, seafood, spices, vegetables, etc.) and picks out recipes that you can make with the food you have! Being aware of what you have on hand can even reduce your food waste

There have been so many people taking to social media to help with the dread of staying inside. Celebrities are having mini-concerts in their homes, children’s authors are reading their stories aloud, fitness classes are going virtual, and ‘Delish’ has held live parent and child cooking classes on their Instagram. The world is coming together online to help each other stay positive! If you’re Instagram or Facebook savvy, there may be a class of some sort that may interest you. Keep an eye on your favourite pages and people as they may be going live in the weeks to come.

Even though there are closures and restrictions of restaurants, owners have taken it upon themselves to continue to serve you by take-out but also started to send out meal kits! Places like Piatto Pizzaria in St. John’s and Lefty’s Pizzaria in Grand Falls-Windsor gather all ingredients you need to make some of their delicious dishes at home. This is a great idea for getting together with your quarantine family to make a meal and eat together! Stay connected online with restaurants in your area to see if they have a similar offer near you!
