February 25th: Community Update & Snowmageddon Lessons for the Food System

This month, we want to connect with you in-person as we dig into what’s ahead for Food First NL in 2020, and reflect on lessons learned for the food system from an event that had everyone talking about food security: our #snowmageddon storm and its aftermath.

On February 25th, we’re hosting a full day of multiple events and you can join us for some or all of them. The day is an opportunity to meet our staff, share a meal (or two) and talk about current food security issues and opportunities.

Everything will be happening on Tuesday, February 25th at the St. John’s Community Market at 245 Freshwater Road in St. John's. The Community Market is an accessible venue.

Contact info@foodfirstnl.ca or (709) 237-4026 with questions.

Food First NL Community Update & Lunch

Meet Food First NL’s new CEO, Josh Smee, and hear about what we accomplished in 2019 and what’s coming up for the organization in 2020. The update will be followed by a light lunch and opportunity to connect with our staff and some of our board members. Register at this link.

Time: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Snowmageddon: Lessons for the Food System

In the afternoon and evening we’re opening up space to debrief about the recent storm and state of emergency: what worked and what didn’t work in our food system and how can we collectively change things to do better next time. We know that severe weather events will be happening more often as we face a climate crisis, and with new insights from the recent storm we can begin to take action now. Food First NL will follow-up on these sessions by sharing recommendations gathered from the public and food system stakeholders.

Part 1: Food System Response to the State of Emergency

Facilitated discussions with food system stakeholders to reflect on responses to the state of emergency. This part is by invitation only and folks will be contacted by Food First NL requesting their participation.

TIme: 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Part 2: Snowmageddon Lessons for the Food System: Public Meal & Panel Discussion

Join us for a meal and a panel discussion. We’ll reflect together on how food security was felt by people differently during the state of emergency and what more needs to be done in the future. Panelists will include representatives from Choices for Youth, Empower, the City of St. John’s, and Food First NL, with more panelists TBA. A facilitated discussion will take place after the panel. Child care will be available. Find out more and register at this link.

Time: 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
