Food First NL is a provincial nonprofit organization that works with individuals, organizations, and communities across Newfoundland & Labrador to ensure everyone has access to affordable, healthy, and culturally appropriate food. For more information on the organization and its priorities, visit www.foodfirstnl.ca.
This work is taken on by a dedicated staff team (12 and growing!) and guided by an engaged, policy-focused, Board of Directors. That Board has a small number of open seats, and is now seeking new members.
The Board of Directors meets quarterly with secretarial support from Food First NL staff. The Executive Committee meets at least quarterly as well. Terms are two years long and directors may serve up to three terms. Board members may be located anywhere in the province - travel support is typically made available for at least one in-person meeting each year, with other meetings conducted fully or partially by teleconference.
Who We’re Looking For
Food First NL recognizes that systemic barriers related to gender, race and ethnicity, Indigeneity, ability, physical and mental health, age, and socio-economic status limit or prevent people’s equal access to power and resources within society. In order to address these barriers within our own organization and broader community, Food First NL is committed to practicing equity in all aspects of our work. That includes our governance.
Ideal board candidates will diversify the range of lived experiences on the Board of Directors. In particular, we encourage and will prioritize applications from people with lived experience of food insecurity (constraints on access to nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate food).
Application Process
Anyone interested in taking on joining the Board can fill out the Expression of Interest form available at www.foodfirstnl.ca/board. The deadline for applications is March 25th, 2022. Applicants will be asked to provide three references, some background on themselves and their reasons for being interested in the board, and some information on their skills/experience.
All expressions of interest will be reviewed by the Board’s Recruitment Committee, which will recommend candidates for informal interviews that are conducted by the Board Chair, following which reference checks will be conducted and a recommendation will be made to the Board.
